2015/2016 Season Review

 

Thanks to sponsorship deals with Colten Care and SD Sport, Matthew has increased his weekly training with his coach Mathew Ware since the start of the 2015/16 season and has played in at least 18 tournaments (including several Grand Prix, 2* and 4* events) winning six. Some of the locations travelled to are: Cippenham, Horsham, Bristol, Aldershot, Derby, Milton Keynes, London, East Midlands and Huddersfield. Matthew also travelled to Germany, to participate in one of the “ Rhineland Cup “ tournaments in Hattert; he won all his matches giving a boost to his German ranking points. Matthew also received one-to-one coaching at Zugbrucke Grenzau.

Playing for Pompey in the Junior British league, Matthew helped the team win the division (div 2) and gain promotion to division 1. He also helped Hampshire finish 2nd in the Junior County Championships in the premier division – their best result for many, many years. Matthew won the Hampshire U18 Singles Champion title and was runner-up in the Senior Singles event.

At the end of April Matthew qualified for the under-18 English National Championships in Huddersfield, where he had a convincing win against the under-18 number 22 in England and took a game off the number 2.

Playing for New Milton A in the Bournemouth league Premier division, Matthew averaged 86% (67% in 2014/2015). Playing for Waterside A in the Southampton league Premier division, Matthew averaged 88% (69% in 2014/2015) helping to win the division title for the the second year in a row. Matthew was subsequently voted Southampton Table Tennis Association U18 player of the year.

Following training in Germany, Matthew has been asked to join Mainz 05 TTC. Their first team currently play in the Bundesliga 3. He is looking forward to playing in their second and third teams next season where there are good opportunities to develop as a player against consistently strong opposition.
